Welcome

As students get older they will have to make decisions about medicines and will need to communicate with doctors, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals. Medicines and You aims to help senior cycle students develop some of the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and understanding needed to take responsibility for their own health and focuses particularly on the importance of using medicines correctly.

Medicines and You is an educational resource developed by The Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA) for senior cycle students, particularly those doing transition year or applied Leaving Certificate programmes. It is also flexible enough to be used with students undertaking the Established and Vocational Leaving Certificate programmes.

This resource has been made available on both a CD and through a dedicated website (www.medicinesandyou.ie).

Within this CD/website you will find teaching guidelines, activities, student handouts and reference material which aim to:

• inform senior cycle students about medicines, their development and use
• give them the skills required to use medicines effectively
• develop positive, responsible attitudes towards medicines and their uses
• provide students with the critical skills they need to use healthcare sites on the internet.

The Introduction page will provide you with guidance on how to use the content
on this website and also background information on IPHA.
